What burn-after-reading actually means.
Burn-after-reading limits future retrieval from the service. It cannot make someone forget a secret or remove a screenshot. Think about the handoff you need before choosing a deletion setting.
Expiry gives the recipient a window
With an expiry, a note remains retrievable until its time limit, subject to its access requirements. This suits a recipient who may need to return to an attachment or recover from an interrupted connection. Keep your own copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.
Burn is tied to retrieval
In this DRK Note implementation, the server removes a burn note when its encrypted payload is retrieved. That happens before the browser completes password entry and decryption. A wrong password or lost connection can therefore consume the note without a successful read. The confirmation before retrieval matters.
Copies remain copies
Neither setting controls a recipient's downloads, clipboard, screenshots or device backups. Server backups can also retain encrypted data beyond the live note's expiry. These are reasons to share less information and to revoke underlying credentials separately, not reasons to describe deletion as a guarantee of disappearance.
Use DRK Note for a deliberate temporary handoff and read our service-specific privacy notes when deciding whether it fits the material.
